Mechanics Team
Plans, sketches, manufactures and assembles the robot. We design in SolidWorks and manufacture in our own workshop on the CNC machine.

The team
Seventeen seasons of the FIRST Robotics Competition, fifty students, six working groups and one workshop in Shoham.

The Shoham High School team OnyxTronix #2231 has competed for 20 seasons in the FIRST Robotics Competition under the global organisation FIRST.
The team was founded in 2006 and currently consists of 50 students, from sophomores to seniors. Accompanied by FIRST alumni and mentors from different fields of study, we build a robot for each yearly challenge and develop it over six weeks — from the initial prototype to a working machine.
The team is divided into six working groups: mechanics, control, electronics, strategy, community and marketing. Beyond that we gather resources, organise social activities for the community and represent both ourselves and FIRST in general.
OnyxTronix #2231 counts as one of the leading teams in Israel and is listed among the top teams in the world. For three years in a row we represented Israel at the global competition and reached many admirable accomplishments and awards.
Our vision
We believe in the right and the duty of everyone to develop themselves in a safe and accepting environment that encourages learning, initiative thinking, community involvement and self-fulfilment.
All of the above is possible by planning, developing and creating a strategic robot while building a heritage based on introducing science and technology into society.
How we work
Every team has a team leader, coordinated by the team's main captain. The captain's job is to prioritise and coordinate the work between every team.
Plans, sketches, manufactures and assembles the robot. We design in SolidWorks and manufacture in our own workshop on the CNC machine.
Writes the robot code in Java, tunes the control loops and owns everything the software does on the field.
Wires the robot and builds the control board — power distribution, sensors and motor controllers, kept tidy and reliable.
Analyses the annual game, builds strategy methods, runs scouting and forms the field crew: drivers, human player and coach.
Runs community activity on behalf of the team — award submissions, mentoring young FIRST teams in our hometown, outreach events and team bonding.
Everything around social media and sponsors — editing, graphic design, photography and video, the team’s brand and the material that goes out to partners.
Get involved
Whether you want to design, build, code, strategise or tell our story — there is a place for you on OnyxTronix. We are also always looking for sponsors and mentors who want to help the next generation of engineers get started.
